Smart Buildings Show 2024 is delighted to announce The Lighting Industry Association (LIA) as an association partner.

An increasing shift towards LED lighting is helping to improve the UK’s position in its aim to meet its net zero carbon emissions by 2050 target. An effective lighting control system can add to a building’s environmental credentials by helping to ensure the lights are only on at times they are needed and only in the places they are needed. It is therefore becoming widely recognised that lighting controls will play a significant role in creating intelligent buildings fit for the 21st century.

Visitors to the show will have the opportunity to discover more about the latest lighting control products, and they can learn more about their relevance to the smart buildings industry in the Controls and Networks Theatre, which is sponsored this year by the DALI Alliance – the internationally-standardised protocol for digital communication between lighting control devices.

Smart Buildings Show Sales Manager Claire Hatchett expressed her delight at having the support of the LIA, saying: “We are very proud to welcome the LIA on board as an association partner of Smart Buildings Show. The LIA is a hugely influential organisation in a sector that will play a vital role in helping to create intelligent and sustainable buildings for the future. We have a number of exhibitors involved in lighting controls and we are looking forward to helping spread the word about their increasing importance in smart building design.”

Taking place at ExCeL London on 9th – 10th October, Smart Buildings Show 2024 will connect visitors to the latest information and technology in the smart buildings industry. A full conference programme across four theatres will provide visitors with a wide range of relevant talks and discussions relating to the smart buildings industry.

The 29th edition of the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition (GILE) concluded on 12th June 2024, at the China Import and Export Complex in Guangzhou, concurrently with Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology (GEBT). Running under the theme of “Light – The Power of Infinity” GILE 2024 gathered industry players to explore the diverse applications of light, and was met with much positive feedback from participants.

Key figures from GILE and GEBT 2024:

  • Exhibitors: 3,383 from 20 countries and regions
  • Scale: 260,000 gross sqm (26 halls in areas A and B)

Ms Lucia Wong, General Manager of Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, conveyed her gratitude for the unwavering support from the industry towards the event: “In the era of ‘Light +’, the lighting industry is poised to expand its horizons with an array of new applications. The theme of this year’s show, ‘Light – The Power of Infinity’ symbolises the boundless possibilities of light, encompassing AIoT, optical communication, big data, healthcare, lifestyle, low carbon and new energy solutions, aquaculture, new media arts, extended reality, and countless other domains. It is at events like GILE where this can be made into reality, and the huge number of participants at this year’s show along with the incredibly positive feedback we’ve received proves that we are indeed succeeding in this effort. I would therefore like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the industry for their invaluable contribution in making GILE possible and helping the show to reach new heights.”

3,383 exhibitors presented innovative lighting technologies

The 2024 edition of the fair stands as one of its most substantial to date, with 26 halls and 260,000 sqm of exhibition space hosting 3,383 exhibitors from diverse industries. Throughout the fairground, GILE 2024 garnered widespread acclaim from all manner of participants.

Exhibitors’ comments
“I believe GILE is one of the most significant events in the lighting industry. It carries the responsibility to promote sustainability because of its broad influence. Being part of this platform is crucial for us to communicate our commitment to sustainability to all our industry partners, customers and suppliers. This year’s show is enormous in terms of the number of visitors and unmatched in the quality of those visitors. We are here because we have a strong belief in the local Chinese market, which is evolving in ways that align with Vossloh-Schwabe’s interests. That’s why we continue to invest in this exhibition every year.”
Mr Kenji H.P. Lau, General Manager, Vossloh-Schwabe Hong Kong Ltd

“I’ve been with the company for just over a decade, and during that time we’ve been coming every year. In the early days we attended the show in order to have a stronger presence in the China market, but now this has become one of the biggest international shows for lighting. The turnout has been very good this year, with people from all over the world and from all different types of lighting applications are coming through and visiting our booth. We’re marketing to our direct customers, many of whom have booths here themselves, but also to specifiers and lighting designers, we want them to know who we are and what we have to offer.”
Mr Tom Jory, VP Power Device Marketing & MARCOM – Marketing, Luminus Devices Inc

“Among the many lighting exhibitions in China, GILE stands out with its unparalleled scale and influence. We attend the show every year in order to reach more potential customers and expand our business network in the South China region, as well as the rest of the country. At this year’s edition, we have begun to collaborate with a number of exhibiting companies in power supply and light source manufacturing sectors in China.”
Mr Huang Xianbo, Head of Marketing Department/Chief Designer of Smart Lighting Solutions, Jiangsu inSona Communication Technology Co Ltd

“General Lighting specialises in linear lighting, mainly LED strip and neon, and we’re looking for customers ranging from manufacturers to architects and lighting designers. We’ve been coming to GILE every year, and this year we’ve improved the design aspect of our booth, and seen more customers come as a result, so it’s been a very positive response overall. We’ll definitely come back here next year, as it is a meeting point for the industry. For us the benefit of participating is that it attracts serious buyers, who not only attend the show and visit our booth, but also visit our factories, which makes all the difference as they can truly understand our company.”
Mr Richard James, Regional Business Development Manager, General Lighting Electronic Co Ltd

“For many years, we have participated in GILE, which we believe is a driving force for the entire industry. This year’s exhibition has had a very large flow of visitors, and we have also clearly felt an increase in overseas visitors, from countries in the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative as well as from Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia. We will continue to participate in GILE in the years to come, because we believe it is a very good platform that allows us to promote our brand, exchange industry expertise, and expand our network.”
Mr Li Quan, Brand Director, Guangdong PAK Corporation Co Ltd

Visitors’ comments

“GILE is one of the largest lighting fairs in the world, so I think if you are involved in the lighting business it’s obvious that you should come here. China is also the largest market for lighting, and lighting has been a huge development in the country because they have been building so much brand-new infrastructure. What is very interesting for my members, is that at this exhibition you don’t only have lighting fixtures manufacturers represented, you also have components manufacturers, and you can find many different technologies around luminaires on display at the fairground. So, from the perspective of French lighting manufacturers, it’s a very interesting fair.”
Mr Jean-Marie Croué, Executive Officer, Syndicat du Luminaire – GIL (France)

“This is our first time visiting GILE, and we are very impressed by the scale of the show. My association mainly focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT) and this time we are looking for suppliers in the fields of smart and commercial lighting, AI and other advanced smart technologies. The matchmaking programme has helped us to meet with a targeted selection of exhibitors, many of whom we will have further discussions with after the show. I will introduce the show to our association members in Thailand and I hope to organise another delegation next year.”
Dr Suthat Krongchon, President, Thai IoT Association (Thailand)

Speakers’ comments

“Lighting design is evolving from functional and ambient lighting to interactive, data-integrated systems that go far beyond just illumination, much like how mobile phones have evolved from basic communication devices to multi-functional smartphones. China has been making rapid advances in this area, as I find that my clients here in China are more adventurous, they are more open to new technologies and new ideas, and as such many of the latest innovations are coming out of the country in recent years. However, I think for the global lighting industry to work together and function effectively, we must have dialogue between both sides, and that’s why I’m always happy to speak at GILE, to bridge the Chinese and Western lighting communities.”
Mr Martin Klaasen, Principal & Founder of Klaasen Lighting Design

“In my presentation today, I wanted to approach the topic of lighting design from the perspective of daily life, exploring the people and things that emit light in our everyday lives, and how lighting can improve our lives. Many audience members came to listen and I felt the passion and focus of everyone present. The speakers were all highly professional, and the expertise they shared was immensely beneficial to me. I found that the exhibition halls have exceeded my expectations, the venue was bustling with people, whose enthusiasm for lighting design was on clear display.”
Ms Lillian Tian, Founder and Design Director, WTL Design

The next editions of Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition and Guangzhou Electrical Building Technology will be held from 9th – 12th June 2025. Classic designs by heritage lighting specialists William Sugg & Co will be showcased at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which takes place from 21st – 25th May 2024. The world-renowned gardens at the show represent the pinnacle of horticultural excellence with showstopping designs, innovative materials and glorious planting.

Grosvenor Lantern Commission

Leading landscape architect Robert Myers has designed show garden St James’s Piccadilly: Imagine the World to be Different. The garden is being built by Stewart Landscape Construction who commissioned William Sugg & Co to produce a bespoke heritage lantern as part of the prestigious project.

The design of the show garden pays homage to the ‘revitalising influence of urban green spaces, symbolising a message of hope and recovery while igniting the imagination of future generations to envision a different world’. Visitors will enter through an archway reminiscent of the gateways leading to the churchyard at St James’s Piccadilly, where they will step into a contemplative haven, featuring a lush, biodiverse planting scheme.

William Sugg & Co’s brief was to produce a lantern, inspired by St James’s church in Piccadilly, that would be installed underneath the archway at the entrance of the garden. With a long history of designing and manufacturing gas lanterns, William Sugg & Co was well placed to take on this unique project having designed and manufactured heritage street lanterns along London streets, in the Royal Parks and on prestigious buildings worldwide for almost two centuries.

Research revealed that the existing lanterns around St James’s Piccadilly are original William Sugg & Co Grosvenor lanterns with working gas mantles, so their classic design was the ideal starting point for the project.  The traditional Grosvenor lantern design is handcrafted in copper and retains the Victorian heritage styling of the original. The Grosvenor has individual radiused glass panel glazing with a hinged glazed door. These lanterns are usually mounted as standard on galvanised open frogs which are powder coated. The manufacturing process of the Grosvenor is such that it is highly durable, with stainless steel rods to improve structural integrity. For this installation the Grosvenor is hung from the centre of the archway via a powder coated steel drop-rod.

This eye-catching lantern, with stunning details, is a truly classic design well suited to a range of urban and rural environments. The highly decorative frieze is a striking feature that makes the Grosvenor lantern truly unique.

Lucy Bubb, Managing Director of Wiliam Sugg & Co explains: “To compliment Robert Myers’s inspiring scheme and to give authenticity to the piece, our bespoke design features a small Grosvenor fitting, illuminated using our electric mock mantle which has been designed to emulate our original gas mantles in terms of design, scale, output and colour temperature. We were delighted to be asked to work on this project which honours our long heritage of creating the original St James’s lanterns in Piccadilly.”

The William Sugg & Co Grosvenor lantern designed for this unique project has been carefully hand crafted in their workshop in Horsham, West Sussex using traditional techniques.  It is made out of copper and then powder coated in a soft brown grey colour to compliment the earthy, natural colour scheme of the exceptional garden design.

Claverton Cloches Collaboration

Claverton Cloches make exquisite garden cloches, based on those found in Victorian kitchen gardens. These miniature glasshouses combine both period charm and practicality and for the first time, the brand will have a stand at RHS Chelsea Flower Show. William Sugg and Co have collaborated with the brand to supply 2 beautiful, heritage gas-powered lanterns, which can be viewed on their stand PW224 and will complement the Victorian inspired kitchen garden aesthetic.

The lanterns featured are Victoria Gas Back lanterns with a single open flame burner, powder coated in a striking bronze finish, in keeping with the traditional heritage design. William Sugg & Co’s Victoria Back lamp design originated over 100 years ago and were designed to light the narrow passageways of Victorian London. The authentic, passage lantern, incorporates a separately mounted back-plate on which the lantern body is fitted and handcrafted in copper to ensure durability.

Beth Gregg, owner and founder of Claverton Cloches comments; “With their rich heritage and outstanding craftsmanship which reflects our own traditional Victorian designs, William Sugg & Co was the perfect partner to collaborate with on this project. I can’t wait to see the final designs featuring on our stand at Chelsea.”

PLASA Focus Leeds returns to its home, Royal Armouries, from 14th – 15th May 2024 with two sold-out show floors and a bigger-than-ever programme. What’s more, a record number of people have registered to attend the popular northern event for entertainment technology.

With an abundance of brands from pro audio, AV, lighting and staging, visitors can discover new products, meet new suppliers, and leave with many valuable new contacts. Plus, the packed programme will deliver talks, panels, training and demos, led by industry luminaries and leading brands.

On the show floor

Over 200 brands will span two halls, with Ambersphere proudly returning as headline sponsor. Many of the exhibitors will showcase their latest products, with several UK debuts to look out for too.

Lighting brands include Avolites, BeamZ, CHAUVET Professional, Elation Professional, ETC, GLP, Highlite International, Martin Professional, Prolight, Robe, Roxx, TMB, and Vari-Lite.

Pro audio brands include Allen & Heath, Audio-Technica, Bose, d&b audiotechnik, DPA Microphones, EM Acoustics, FBT, Funktion One, Martin Audio, NEXO, Peavey Commercial Audio, RCF UK, Shure, and Sound Technology.

Staging and rigging brands include AED Group, Alustage, Area Four, Chainmasters, CM-ET, Doughty Engineering, Dirty Rigger, Just Rigging & Inspections, Rigging Services, Rigging Team, Rope and Rigging, Trilite, Triple E, and UK Rigging.

Plus, several audio-visual brands will be at the show, including Bosch, Green Hippo, LANG UK, PSCo, Riedel, and ROE Visual.

In the programme

This year’s PLASA Focus Leeds programme is the biggest ever, with sessions addressing the most talked about topics, alongside creative and technical presentations from leading industry figures. The programme is sponsored by Vectorworks who will deliver two sessions: Spotlight and ConnectCAD on Tuesday and pre-production and workflows on Wednesday.

The programme has a focus on the future with sessions on AI and technical theatre with the University of Lincoln; cybersecurity with Singularity; the EU Digital Product Passport with RH Consulting and TAZAAR; and entertainment in video games with Copper Candle.

Careers are also high on the agenda with sessions on networking with Rosco; employability with Soulsound; and motherhood with Women in Lighting. Plus, Bradford 2020 UK City of Culture will be on the hunt for talented creatives. Not only that, all attendees are invited to ‘The Making of Live Events’, a special video launch by Adlib to promote career opportunities across the sector.

Lighting professionals can learn more about their craft in sessions on CRI and LED with Robe; technology and design with the ALPD; and sustainable lighting rigs with White Light.

Audio professionals have plenty to dive into, with sessions on spatial audio with Outboard TiMax and Sonosphere; sound quality with Solotech, SSE Audio and KV2 Audio; creative technology with the ASDP; good sound with the University of Derby; and sports arena sound systems with NEXO.

Several organisations will present at the show too. The Power of Events and LIVE will unpack data from the recent freelancer survey; the ABTT will outline that latest from the Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment; BECTU will discuss the cost-of-living crisis; Create Britain will explain their new regional ecosystem; HSE will advise on health & safety; and PLASA will discuss wellbeing and personal resilience.

Training and demos

Burgeoning lighting designers are invited to attend introductory workshops with ChamSys on MagicQ and QuickQ. And more advanced lighting professionals can learn about timecoded cue stacks, group cues and group FX, and GeNetix network distribution. These sessions have limited spaces and have already proven extremely popular, so visitors are encouraged to sign up via the show website and arrive early to guarantee a space.

Audiophiles can immerse themselves in live audio demonstrations hosted by KV2 Audio who are launching their EX-28, and Sound Technology who will demonstrate the SSL Live console platform. These drop-in sessions will run throughout the show.

Also at the show

The outside courtyard at PLASA Focus Leeds will be having an upgrade this year, with a quality selection of hot food and drinks vendors, as well as a live DJ sponsored by innovative European audio brand SOWA.

Plus, if anyone at the show needs quiet place or safe space, the Eventwell Hub will be open throughout the show, offering a serene environment for those who may feel overwhelmed or have experienced something unsettling. The Eventwell Hub will be located on the first floor and clearly signposted.

Sophie Atkinson, Head of Events for PLASA, comments, “This year’s PLASA FocusLeeds is in a really strong position, with brands and organisations from all walks of the industry coming together to share their technological offerings and their expertise and ideas. We say it every year, but there really is something for everyone at the show this year – the programme is bigger than ever and there are plenty of new names to say hello to. Not to mention, the new and improved courtyard which is always a popular spot to mingle and relax. I hope you’ll join us, along with the spring sunshine!”

PLASA Focus Leeds continues to be a go-to event for the entertainment technology industry, based on its friendly atmosphere and accessible layout. Join your colleagues in Leeds this year at the Royal Armouries from 14th – 15th May. Register free and browse the programme at www.plasaleeds.com
