Today, solar-powered lighting solutions are providing a cost-effective route for local authorities to enhance safety and accessibility along previously unlit paths.

Originally designated the Prittle Brook Greenway after its refurbishment during 2010-2012, this 5.7km route serves as a vital traffic-free connection for cyclists and pedestrians in Southend-on-Sea. Linking urban areas to Woodlands Park in Hadleigh, it offers access to Priory Park, local schools, the hospital, and residential zones. Despite its significance, safety concerns hindered nighttime usage, with 50 percent of residents avoiding the path after dark due to worries about anti-social behaviour. Responding to community feedback, the Southend-on-Sea City Council allocated £225,000 to install lighting along the greenway.

The project was entrusted to the family-run independent business Marwood Lighting Solutions. To enhance safety along the rural Prittle Brook Greenway, the company sought an energy-efficient, off-grid lighting solution with integrated smart controls.

Marwood Lighting Engineers visited Southend on Sea to survey the 3.5Km of Prittle Brook Greenway between Eastwood Road and Victoria Avenue. This was to ensure that the Defender Solar powered lanterns could illuminate the pathway to BS5489-1:2020 and to review any specific site constraints that would need to be considered for the design proposal.

Marwood’s lighting design team produced plots to determine the optimum spacing between the lanterns and to satisfy Southend on Sea City Council that light spill would be carefully controlled. 6m Raise and lower columns were selected to ensure the scheme could be easily maintained in the future as the site does not allow for vehicle access.

120 Defender solar-powered lanterns were installed in the positions indicated by the lighting design by Southend’s nominated contractor in a phased programme which Marwood Lighting Solutions supported, stocking the materials and delivering in batches to suit the project roll out over several months. The solution provides a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly during evening hours.

Cllr Meg Davidson, former cabinet member for environment, commented, “The Prittle Brook Greenway is a beloved path for walkers and cyclists in our city, but it’s clear some folks avoid it after dark due to safety concerns.

The new lights are solar-powered, so they do not need electricity and are smart too. They turn on when someone uses the path and dim down when they’re not needed, being solar powered it saves energy and money.”

David Player, Sales Director at Marwood Lighting Solutions commented, “The solar-powered Defender luminaires we selected for the Prittle Brook project are known to be performing well on many UK projects already, making them the perfect fit for this project as there was no power supply to the area which was in need of lighting. Marwood partner with the very best lighting brands globally, and our extensive collaborations enable us to deliver optimal outcomes for our clients.

The installation has significantly enhanced safety and accessibility for residents of Southend-on-Sea. By combining energy-efficient technology with smart controls, the project demonstrates a commitment to both sustainability and community welfare”.

Following on from last years successful launch of the Going Dark Workshop concept, Traverso Vighy and Light Collective are jointly organising version 2 of the workshop in the heart of Tuscany to exploring lighting design for heritage spaces that also enable us to preserve darkness and the view of the night sky.

Traverso Vighy is an architectural practice based in Italy, passionate about sustainability and nature. Light Collective is a UK based creative consultancy that specialises in international events with light at the heart of its work. Both companies are passionate about light and darkness and educating how to ensure they work well together to both reveal architecture and preserve the night sky.

The event will take place in Monteriggioni, a medieval castle town along the Via Francigena pilgrim track connecting Canterbury to Rome and 3km further along the rural track is the monastery village of Abbadia a Isola. This tiny village is a heritage preserve and the focus of the workshop is to help create the right lighting approach throughout.

The event comprises a number of objectives including a workshop/living lab scenario where participants can work together on site to experiment with lighting approaches and measurement techniques to create and demonstrate responsible approaches to lighting. There is an opportunity to learn about the history of the village, to discover and view the night sky with a local astronomy group, explore how to design in this kind of environment with its inherent issues and also to learn about exemplar projects, technology and case studies.

Participants will get practical and hands-on playing with light and luminaires, learning about glare control, proper optics, appropriate colour temperature, dimming and control thus expanding their lighting portfolio and producing one or more exemplar solutions in a team for a site that will be documented and published in order to promote this approach to lighting design and widen the useable knowledge for the general public.. Participants also get to stay for two nights in the monastery located within the village and participate in a candle lit night in Monteriggioni with star gazing and a moonlit walk as part of the experience.

By inviting the local administration to be involved, the event aims to raise awareness about light pollution and promote responsible lighting practices within the region. Also to encourage individuals and organisations to take steps to reduce light pollution by using appropriate lighting fixtures, reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting and understanding about the negative impacts of light pollution on wildlife, human health and the environment.

It is a chance to be part of an intimate and exclusive experience in the unpolluted night sky of Tuscany. Going Dark aims to promote the town, the co-existence of light, architecture and darkness proving it is possible to celebrate architectural heritage whilst also considering and therefore protecting the night sky. The ultimate goal is to preserve the natural beauty of the night sky and ensure that everyone can enjoy it for generations to come.

Use this link to sign up and to find out more information: https://events.lightcollective.net/GoingDark

There is a cost to participate in the workshop of 180 Euros which includes the accommodation and the various meals.

Going Dark is working with a number of supporters to provide the best equipment and experience to the participants. Digimax and Studio Due Group will be providing technical, installation and lighting control support and luminaires will be provided by Led Linear, L&L Luce & Light, Simes, Thorn Lighting and We-ef.

It is also supported by ROLAN, Comune di Monteriggioni, Osservatorio Astronomico Università di Siena, AD 1213, Associazione Amici del Castello, Unione Astrofili Senesi, the Tuscany Environment Foundation and LUCE magazine.

  • Signify Climate Transition Plan targets entire value chain to eliminate 90 percent full-scope GHG emissions and reach net zero by 2040.
  • Completing the switch to energy-efficient LED lighting would reduce total global GHG emissions by one percent
  • Signify will work closely with customers, partners, and public decision makers to accelerate the sustainable energy transition.
  • Signify, a world leader in lighting, has released its plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 90 percent across its entire value chain against a 2019 baseline and reach net zero by 2040. The plan builds on Signify’s long-established leadership in helping to transform the lighting industry.

“We fundamentally believe in the potential of light to positively impact society, and fully embrace the responsibility that comes with our leadership. As one of the first global companies to commit to verified science-based targets, we are today proud to raise our ambitions with Signify’s net zero 2040 Climate Transition Plan.

Our innovations continue to deliver leaps forward in energy efficiency and sustainable lighting technologies. We will continue to act with urgency, and use our voice to engage our customers, employees, partners, and public decision makers to accelerate climate action across our industry and beyond.” said Eric Rondolat, CEO of Signify.

Signify’s Climate Transition Plan sets out the company’s climate strategy in line with its SBTi -validated net zero targets:

    • Net zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2040
    • 50 percent reduction in absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared with 2019 base year
    • 90 percent reduction in absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, compared with 2019 base year

The Plan includes initiatives and programs across the business and value chain, which include incentivising suppliers to commit to renewable energy, electrification of the logistics fleet and further extending the use of energy-efficient LED lighting – the single biggest factor in reducing the lighting industry’s emissions in recent years.

Since more than 90 percent of Signify’s value chain GHG emissions come from the use of its products throughout their lifecycle, the company’s 2040 net zero ambitions focus on continuing to lead the industry in developing increasingly efficient lighting technologies.

As a result of its actions and innovations, Signify has already achieved a 50 perrcent absolute reduction in GHG emissions across its entire value chain, including the scope 3 use phase, since 2019. Yet a sizeable proportion of the global lighting stock is still conventional, meaning there is a significant opportunity for rapid progress. A global switch to energy-efficient LED would reduce global GHG emissions by one percent.

Earlier this year, Signify joined forces with Climate Group and other partners to launch Renovation Revolution with the goal of boosting renovation rates across the European Union -a crucial step if the region is to achieve its 2050 net-zero objectives. Helen Clarkson, CEO of Climate Group, said of the launch of Signify’s 2040 Climate Transition Plan: “Climate Group welcomes this Climate Transition Plan by Signify, which shows what can and must be achieved by companies if we are to decarbonise across the economy and reach net-zero. We’ve been working in partnership for over 15 years to accelerate the global rollout of LEDs and work towards a more energy efficient built environment. We look forward to many more years working together with Signify, along with other businesses and government partners, to unlock a renovation revolution and to double energy efficiency by 2030.”

Paul Dickinson, co-founder of Transition Value Partners, also Founder of CDP where he is Strategic Adviser, and co-presenter of the Outrage and Optimism podcast, said: “Signify is the energy efficiency powerhouse behind Philips lighting, and the biggest manufacturer of LEDs in the world. Low energy lighting is pivotal to reducing an activity representing two percent of global emissions. As the premium global brand for responsible manufacturing and ultra-low power consumption, more and more companies committed to a just transition to net zero will specify Signify, not least to comply with their CSRD supply chain requirements. This company is a leader in global decarbonisation, and its pioneering transition plan raises the bar, while showing its commitment to helping others meet their Science-Based Targets and get to net-zero.”

Signify will report regularly on progress against the plan in its annual report.

As London’s skyline evolves, 2 More London is a space where innovation meets inspiration, powered by TRILUX lighting excellence.

In the bustling heart of London’s South Bank, amidst the iconic skyline between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, lies 2 More London—a contemporary hub for office space. Recently revitalised, the third floor of this landmark underwent a CAT A fit-out, setting new workplace design and sustainability standards. TRILUX, renowned for its technical lighting expertise, played a pivotal role in illuminating this prestigious project.

As a hub for business and creativity, 2 More London demanded a lighting solution that not only met the highest efficiency standards but also didn’t disappoint aesthetically. Led by the consultancy Chapman BDSP, the project aimed to create a workspace that attracts the highest-quality tenants, showcasing the architectural aesthetic against the stunning London backdrop.

Here, we have 14,362 sq ft of office space encased in floor-to-ceiling glazing; the project called for a high-quality lighting solution with minimal glare while maintaining consistency and energy efficiency. TRILUX rose to the challenge, working closely with Paul Earl Limited to implement their cutting-edge lighting products.

TRILUX’s commitment to innovation and sustainability shone through in the selection of products. The Inperla Ligra Plus LED downlight, renowned for its easy-mounting and flexible design, was seamlessly integrated into existing ceiling cutouts. Sonnos LED downlights, provided exceptional quality light —a perfect fit for refurbishment requirements.

Notably, over 500 metres of bespoke LED light channel was the star of the show in the office space. This solution illuminated the vast expanse of office space, delivering both functionality and style.

The luminaires are highly recyclable, and the LED light channel can be reconfigured for specific tenants’ requirements and can be fully refurbished and reused in the future, reducing the carbon impact.

Luke Facer, Electrical Project Manager at Paul Earl Limited, said, “Working on the Cat A at 2 More London was really exciting in such a sought-after location with outstanding views of the City and Tower Bridge from the 3rd floor; working with TRILUX was a pleasure, with exceptional communication from Vick and Gary, who were always on the phone to answer any queries or send any information that was requested by myself. The TRILUX light fittings themselves were of A1 quality and easy to assemble on-site with a sleek finish that really set off the hanging rafts that they were installed into.”

In a market where Grade A spaces redefine workplace standards, 2 More London strives for more: More freedom. More flexibility. More capability. More creativity. TRILUX’s lighting design and technology expertise played a vital role in shaping the future of the workspace – a fusion of efficiency, creativity, and sustainability.

Glamox has delivered 1,400 new smart LED lights that will make the venue even more attractive for international events, and drastically reduce both electricity costs and its climate impact

There has been no shortage of major events at the Trondheim Spektrum, in Trondheim, Norway, over the past year, with quarter-finals in the Women’s Handball World Championship, the Champions League in men’s handball, and not least the Eurovision Song Contest Melodi Grand Prix.

Now Trondheim Spektrum has completed a project that makes it possible to host even more major sports and entertainment events. Through a major retrofit, the fluorescent lighting in the 33,400 square meter indoor venue has been replaced with LED lighting from Glamox. The Oslo-headquartered business, a leader in lighting solutions for professional and commercial buildings and marine and offshore markets, has delivered around 1,400 new energy-saving LED luminaires in a project that has been ongoing since 2018.

“Trondheim Spektrum has now put in place connected energy-efficient LED lights that will reduce the amount of electricity used for lighting by around 80 percent. This leads to a lower climate impact and lower electricity bills. Built-in sensors mean that the lighting is only used when it is needed, which has led to the power consumption in Spektrum plummeting. Since LED lights last longer, we will also reduce maintenance costs and free up staff,” says Jan Tøndelstrand, Operations Manager at Trondheim Spektrum Eiendom, which owns and operates Trondheim Spektrum.

Tøndelstrand believes that the new luminaires make the Spektrum even more attractive for larger, international events and improve the overall quality of the indoor light. The largest hall has a capacity of 12,000 people during concerts and can accommodate 8,900 seated spectators at handball matches.

The change also ensures that Trondheim Spektrum complies with the new EU regulation that phases out fluorescent lighting across Europe1.

“Glamox’s mission is to create sustainable lighting solutions that improve people’s performance and well-being. This project contributes to that by helping Trondheim Spektrum reduce its carbon footprint and save costs, while at the same time making it an even more attractive venue for major international events. The new luminaires also make its halls compliant with the EU directive that phases out fluorescent lights across Europe,” says Toril Bache Jenssen, Sales Director for Glamox in Norway.

    Smart LED luminaires

The project began as early as 2018, when the newly built and largest hall (Hall A) was equipped with 64 luminaires of the type Glamox i80 and 119 Glamox i90. At the same time, Glamox delivered 632 other LED luminaires for the hall’s offices, backstage, storage areas, ticket offices, toilets, lounges, meeting rooms, corridors, etc. The lighting used in these areas included Glamox C70 linear luminaires, C35 recessed ceiling luminaires, and D70-R downlights.

The next phase of the project started last year when fluorescent tube luminaires were replaced in halls D, E and F with a total of 567 Glamox C52 luminaires. This low-profile yet robust luminaire has a variety of light distribution variants, making it ideal for multi-purpose halls with high ceilings. It also has excellent glare control for the comfort and viewing of spectators and competitors. Hall D has a greater concentration of C52 luminaires, providing downlight and angled lighting to satisfy the lighting conditions required by TV broadcasters. The luminaires are connected by DALI to a lighting control system.

1 The EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive aims to prevent the risks posed to human health and the environment through electronic and electrical waste, by eliminating products containing potentially hazardous materials, such as mercury in fluorescent lighting. From 25 August 2023, the most popular linear (T5 and T8 tubes) fluorescent tubes were phased out. Sales from stock are permitted until they run out, hence the need to switch to LED lighting.

CIBSE is delighted to announce the appointment of Fiona Cousins as its new President. Fiona, who holds several senior roles at Arup, brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to advancing sustainability and broadening the focus on building performance in the industry.

Fiona Cousins takes over the presidency from Adrian Catchpole, to whom she extends heartfelt thanks for his significant contributions, especially in promoting STEM Ambassadors in schools and the certified practice initiatives. These efforts will continue to be a priority for CIBSE under Fiona’s leadership.

“I am really excited about taking on the role of CIBSE president,” said Fiona Cousins. “These are volatile and complex times, and CIBSE has an enormous role in addressing the big challenges of our time: climate change, social inequity, and decreasing biodiversity. The breadth of impact of building services engineers, whether they be as lighting, vertical transportation, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, façade, or digital specialists, is such that we can and should be working towards addressing all of these issues.”

As the Americas Region Chair at Arup, Fiona has led numerous award-winning projects and has been recognised as a leading figure in the commercial real estate industry. Her vision for CIBSE includes building on the traditional view of building performance by putting more emphasis on occupant wellbeing, air quality, acoustic performance, and resilience to climate change.

“Much of the work of building services engineers has been very sharply focused on energy use, where the relationship with climate change has long been clear. It’s time to broaden that view to put more emphasis on other things. We spend most of our lives indoors, and buildings can support our wellbeing through air quality, acoustic performance, lighting design, or environments that support biophilia” she underscores.

A new series of workshops to help lighting producers access the growing market for the  remanufacture of lighting has been announced by Recolight. The intensive training workshops will give attendees the information they need to be able to set up a remanufacturing service in the UK – or to procure one from a subcontractor.

An increasing number of specifiers and major purchasers are now prioritising the remanufacture of luminaires.  But the large number of lighting manufacturers currently unable to provide such a service cannot take advantage of this fundamental market change.

Designed and hosted by lighting product designer, Simon Fisher of F Mark, topics covered include:

    • A deep dive into BS8887:221 (the BSI standard for remanufacturing lighting products).
    • Assessing suitability of used luminaires for remanufacture
    • Upgrading fluorescent fittings to LED
    • Onsite upgrades vs in-facility upgrades
    • Managing compliance of the finished luminaires
    • Liabilities, warranties, and managing customer expectations
    • Carbon Footprint vs Carbon handprint
    • Case studies & Common pitfalls
The workshops are intended for technical managers, design and engineering managers, quality managers, compliance engineers, sustainability managers, marketing managers, product managers, and any others that influence product manufacture and design. They are a roundtable environment with a maximum of 12 delegates, giving the opportunity for full interaction, feedback, and questions for each topic. Places are available for Thursday 27 June, in London, with more dates to be announced.

Delegate feedback from previous Recolight workshops:

“A very informative and worthwhile day! Although the topic is massive in its importance and complexity it was delivered in a very logical, practical and thought provoking way.” Gary Dettmar , Head of Architecture, TRILUX Lighting Ltd

For the third time in a row, the Zumtobel Group has been awarded a gold medal by the independent sustainability rating platform EcoVadis. In an industry comparison, the lighting group is ranked among the top 1% of all companies assessed by the platform. The successive recognition with the gold medal underlines the Zumtobel Group’s consistent and continuous development and sustainability activities.

“Evaluations by independent and globally acting rating agencies such as EcoVadis are highly relevant for our company, as they confirm the path we have taken with all the measures we have implemented so far and the goals we have set for ourselves. Together with our specialist departments, the Sustainability Team makes the best possible contribution to the Zumtobel Group’s sustainable development. This benefits the environment, our customers, and our partners, ” says Sebastian Gann, Sustainability Director at the Zumtobel Group.

    Sustainable development

While the Zumtobel Group particularly distinguished itself in the area of sustainable procurement last year, this year, an improvement of ten points was achieved in the area of labour and human rights. This was mainly due to the numerous measures implemented regarding employee health in the past financial year and the fact that ISO 45001 certifications (management systems for occupational health and safety) were obtained for all European plants. With a total score of 78 points, the lighting group was able to maintain its solid rating foundation while at the same time further improving it.

    About EcoVadis

EcoVadis, an independent platform for sustainability ratings, was founded in 2007 and assesses the performance of companies in the categories Environment, Labor and Human Rights, Sustainable Procurement, and Ethics. The rating is based on international sustainability standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact, and ISO 26000. More than 130,000 companies from over 180 countries and 220 industries regularly have their value chain evaluated by EcoVadis.
